Apogee (APOG) "Trading Transparency"

Hello Friends! Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting my blog, Stock Picks Bob's Advice! In the last week I have chosen to 'swap out' of a couple of my holdings into stocks that I believe have greater potential, at least over the intermediate term. There isn't really anything wrong with Starbucks, or Coach. These are classic growth stocks and classic Peter Lynch kind of stocks with a great, understandable product and steady growth in revenue and numbers. It is just that I sense a certain fatigue in their performance. As if they have grown quickly and need to rest awhile before moving once again to higher levels.

Today, with the market charging higher, and Coach literally dragging, I chose to sell this stock and look on the top % gainers list for another pick. Apogee Enterprises (APOG) a stock that I recently wrote up has been having a nice day today, and as I write, is trading at $27.34, up $1.40 or 5.4% on the day. Earlier it was on the top % gainers list of the NASDAQ.

Looking for a replacement for my Coach position, I purchased 280 shares of APOG at $27.53 in my account. Time will tell whether this was a wise move. It would be interesting to hear from some of you readers about this particular swap. Would you have done this? What about Starbucks? What about all of the trading rules?

Hi Bob,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I haven't looked at all the data, but strictly sticking to rules and signals I am surprised that you did this. But, overall, I think with all of your expertise and experience you know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em. Please keep up all the great info and posts.

Thank you as always for your kind words. I certainly am an amateur and am capable of mistakes. In fact I was at my stock club last night and suggested the possibility that they also sell their shares of Coach (COH) and went over the numbers. They really weren't that bad at all! And the club hung on to their shares of Coach.

Ironically, one member of the club really liked the Apogee story and my club bought some shares of APOG. It is indeed possible that I jumped the gun on this one. Usually when I do break my own rules from some 'gut feeling' or whatever, its a mistake! THAT is why I set up rules :).

So let's see what happens with Coach going forward and what happens with APOG. My own misgiving about APOG is that they sell high end architectural as well as art glass. They recently got the contract for one of the World Trade Center buildings being rebuilt which is an impressive contract. But is the real estate market going to rebound adequately for a company like this to overcome the weakness in that sector?

My mother used to have an expression of 'jumping from the pot into the frying pan'. (I probably butchered that as well!) In other words, did I really improve the quality of the portfolio with that trade? Doug S., a regular reader, was also surprised by my move. Maybe all of you guys are right.....it might have been an oops. But I think it will work out fine.
