Satyam Computer Services (SAY) "Trading Transparency"

Hello Friends!  Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting my blog, Stock Picks Bob's Advice!  As always, please remember that I am an amateur investor so please remember to consult with your professional investment advisers prior to making any investment decisions based on information on this website.

As I just wrote up on my last entry, my Coach Stock (COH) has been an absolutely phenomenal performer in my portfolio.  The stock hit an appreciation target and I sold 1/7th of my position.  Being under my maximum (my new level) of 20 positions, I thus had a "permission slip" to add a new position to the mix.

And you know how I love to buy stocks!

Anyhow, checking the list of top % gainers today, I immediately saw a stock that I recently reviewed, Satyam Computer Services (SAY), trading at $25.81, up $1.87 or 7.91% on the day.  The company released earnings early today that showed revenue up 36.7% from a year earlier and earnings up 38.6% for the quarter as well.  This strong performance was enough to get the stock onto the top % gainers list and was enough to get my attention as well!

I often talk about the 'vocabulary' of stocks in making investing decisions.  Having a bunch of 'candidates' that are 'investable' helps me make a relatively quick decision as I did.  These decisions aren't always successful as my recent sale of Medtox demonstrates, but it helps being an informed investor.  And that is what my homework is all about!

Way to go on COH! That's very exciting!

I bought 95 shares of SAY on Monday. SAY was at about -4% for the week until today, so now it's at +2.48%. It feels good to be on the plus side.

Also, I have been looking at adding GCO to get my position number up to 4. Everything seems to look good to me except the growth in stock price that can be seen on the charts. I have decided to do a minimum of 5 positions, 10 being neutral and 20 being maximum. I plan on investing about $3,000 per position and possibly raising the amount  as time goes on.

Can you tell me what you think about GCO's charts? I can see that there is a consistent gain, but it doesn't seem to be very significant. How big a factor should this be?

Is Morningstar.com the best way to learn about a particular company's quarterly earnings and to see if they beat expectations? You have mentioned that particular companies have announced their quarterly earnings and they exceded projections. Where do you usually get this information?

Genesco (GCO) is in play.  They are in the process of being acquired (?) by Foot Locker.  All bets are off and it isn't my kind of stock at this time.

A consistent gain in a chart is a good idea.  Good luck with your portfolio and keep me posted.

On the earnings question I simply use Yahoo Finance and look up the headlines.  Within the news stories, often from Marketwatch, is the information about whether the company beat expectations or not.

Get familiar with Yahoo.

I provide lots of links to the stories and if you click on them you will get to the information I write about.

Eric,

Final point.  You are sounding a bit euphoric with the market rise.  Try very hard to take emotion out of the formula.  It will cloud your thinking.

Go very slow as you build an initial portfolio.  I believe the market is high risk for a correction, and I would hate to see a new investor jump in too fast and too far.  Maybe add just a single new position each month as you build your exposure to that "neutral setting".

Above all, remember that I am an amateur investor, so I am not sure if your investment actions are appropriate for you.
